Location: The Atlantic Theatre Company
Play: "Parlour Song", by Jez Butterworth
BANG. 20 minutes into the play, and BANG, the purse of a latecomer smacks me in the back of my head. I ignore it and continue to watch the indescribably delicious Jonathan Cake do a workout onstage. A few minutes later: BANG again. Looking behind me, I see I've been hit with a gigantic diaper bag, and its owner has an infant in her arms. An actual infant. At a live performance. In a NYC theatre. This is not something one sees often.
The baby fussed and cried, and several times, I'd be BANGED on the head by the diaper bag as the woman got up to retreat to the back of the theatre after being shushed by annoyed audience members. But near the end of the play, they settled back in behind me again, and this time, I can hear audible suckling sounds, which accompanied a memorable scene where Emily Mortimer was called a "dirty whore" by Cake's character.
I recommend seeing the show, as it's superbly written, and has a great cast. But leave the kid at home. Breasts welcome.
